Scholarship Opportunities


1. The Lionel Cuffie Award for Activism and Excellence
The Lionel Cuffie Award for Activism and Excellence will be given to 3 graduating seniors (one student from New Brunswick, Newark & Camden) who identifies as lesbian, gay , bisexual, transgender, queer, or ally. The awardee will receive a citation and a gift of $500. The following criteria must be met:
• Completion of the Undergraduate Degree in May, 2016
• Active in the LGBTQ communities on or off-campus for at least two years.
• Has worked to reduce prejudice against and to promote understanding of LGBTQ communities and issues
• Has worked with other campus or community groups to support multicultural issues and activities
• Is graduating with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA

2. Circle of Friends Awards
Since 2005, "Circle of Friends" Scholarship awards has provided funding support to more than 45 Students and 8 Community activist assisting others in our community and in our lives. Awards totaling more than $50,000 have been rewarded to deserving students and leaders providing services to people in need in communities within Greater Newark.

3. 2015 Edgar Richards Scholar Award
LGBTQ Students attending an accredited college or university in Fall 2016 are eligible to apply!
-$1000 schoarship
-Must be available for Riverside Church's annual Pride Breakfast during NYC Pride (June).
-Winner is welcome to ride on the Riverside Float at the NYC Pride Parade

4. LGBT Leadership Scholarship

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is pleased to announce the establishment of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Student Scholarship Fund. This annual award will serve to support and recognize outstanding undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden Campuses) who have:
• demonstrated financial need
• demonstrative academic achievement
• promoted civil rights by working to prevent discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

5. The Welcoming Project Scholarship
The Welcoming Project will award a $500 scholarship to one undergraduate student and a $500 scholarship to one graduate student who provide outstanding contributions to LGBTQ activism. In the past, we have received applications from LGBTQ activist students at universities in Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Texas. We are impressed with the caliber of students across the United States who are dedicated to LGBTQ activism and proud to offer these scholarships to support their work.
Applicants must be enrolled in degree-granting institutions in August 2016 and provide an outstanding contribution to LGBTQ activism. The award winners will be announced at our anniversary celebration in spring 2016.
